I usually post this much earlier after a major content patch or expansion, but I’ve been investing a lot of time in the game trying to gear and rep up. I also wanted to get a good feel for everything before I posted my opinions.
Eclipse damage disparity
Whether you’re attempting to single target or AoE, there’s a huge disparity in our DPS. Wrath and Astral Storm have been nerfed to give a ‘flavor’ to each Eclipse. Lunar Eclipse is much stronger for direct damage and Solar is much stronger for AoE. I don’t like it. Eclipse/Astral Communion management now becomes an integral part of min/max. I would be much happier of Starfire and Hurricane were nerfed and Wrath and Astral Storm buffed.
Burst versus Sustain
Due to our two (or three, depending on your talents) cooldowns, balance druids are excellent at burst DPS in Mists. The problem lies with sustain. We’re like a charging stallion out of the gate, but by mid-field, we’ve slowed to a trot. With the lack of an execute (and the fact that most other classes now have some sort of execute), other classes are quick to catch up to us.
Lack of talent variety
One of the attractive things to this new talent system was the supposed lack of talent variety. While we may see this a bit with our level 90 talents, it really isn’t true in level 60. Incarnation hands down beats the rest. Force of Nature is an absolute joke that scales horribly, and hasn’t been addressed, since, well, when it was first introduced.
Forced Hybridization for top DPS?
I’ve never been a fan of all three level 90 talents involving some sort of hybridization. That being said, the hybrid-portion of HotW and Nature’s Vigil can largely be ignored (unless you really want to mooncat). Many sims, however, are showing Dream of Cenarius to be the top talent once we get to high haste levels at the end of this tier. I do not want to be forced to throw healing touches just to min/max my DPS. This talent needs a complete rework. We need a throughput-only level 90 talent.
All-in-all, I’m happy with Mists. It’s probably one of the most enjoyable expansion launches for me so far. Every expansion, Moonkin are making great strides to really be on par with non-hybrid classes, however I am starting to wonder if we’ll ever hit equalization before World of Warcraft is replaced by Titan.

Since I didn’t really have enough time to sit down and crunch the Tier 13 set bonuses, I decided to make a second post actually detailing my thoughts.
2P: Insect Swarm increases all damage done by your Starfire, Starsurge, and Wrath spells against that target by 3%.
This bonus is nice, and definitely better then the junk 2p T12 bonus that we currently have, however, I’m not sure I like it when you compare it to other DPS classes 2piece bonus. Some of them seem to be pretty amazing, and while I don’t know other classes nearly as well as I do moonkin, seem they’d average more then 3% more damage on their main nukes.
4P: Starsurge generates 100% extra Lunar or Solar energy while Eclipse is not active.
I think unanimously, the opinion on the 4 piece bonus is that it’s extremely weak. Starsurge is our highest DPS nuke that we have available. Why we could sacrifice it outside of an Eclipse just to get an extra 15 energy is beyond me. That being said, it could be fixed very simply:
Starsurge generates 100% extra Lunar or Solar energy while Eclipse is not active, or costs 0 Lunar or Solar energy while Eclipse is active.
This would give us one extra cast IN an Eclipse, and I think would be much more attractive. But honestly, I’d also like us to see some bonuses that didn’t involve Eclipse. It’s getting old already.
