Ghostcrawler: Level 90 Talents Revamped

by on May.07, 2012, under Mists of Pandaria

Ghostcrawler recently posted in the beta forum regarding level 90 druid talents, here’s what he has to say:

We’re not yet happy with the druid level 90 row. We still like the theme of it playing into the druid’s hybrid nature and we want to reassure you (which I think most of you already know) that druids won’t do lower damage or healing compared to other classes just because some other class has an unambiguous throughput increasing talent at level 90. Classes are balanced around their whole package.

Nonetheless, we want the bottom row of talents to be exciting. In the next (hopefully) build, you’ll see a few changes.

Disentanglement — no longer a talent. Shapeshifting for all druids just breaks roots.

Dream of Cenarius — increases damage spells by 70% (up from 30%).

Heart of the Wild — now also grants 6% passive Agility and Intellect.

Nature’s Vigil — replaces Disentanglement. Increases all damage and healing done by 30% for 30 sec, with a 3 min cooldown. While active, all healing spells also damage a nearby target for 50% of healing done, and all damage spells and abilities also heal a nearby friendly target for 50% of the damage done.Let us know how they feel once you get a chance to try them.

I am happy for these changes, and Nature’s Vigil is the type of talent we’ve been asking for.  Having disentanglement returned baseline for ALL specs (it already was for balance) is also a nice touch.

We now have two throughput increasing talents:  Heart of the Wild, which is a passive 6% intellect boost at all times, or Nature’s Vigil, which is a burst DPS boost.  Depending on the fight will depend which option we go for.  I’m afraid no one will actually take Heart of the Wild for anything BUT the passive stat boost, however.  The rest of the talent could not exist and I doubt anyone would care.

What’s your opinion?

I am lovin’ it! Especially the part where Disentanglement is again a baseline ability.

Now we have only 1 talent lvl 90 that is in line with the other classes, nothing of exceptional. HotW still sucks, still is worthless and more or less we can say the same for DoC.
In any case it’s good to see something moves up after countless topics in the us and eu forums.

The flat passive bonus is the way in which they try to make us to consider it, but the main problem of the ability is still there unchanged, so basically what you are comparing with the other two talents is the +6% stats and as design it sucks, even if as bonus it can be good.
So right now we have HotW that become the passive talent (because it’s kind of worthless consider the cd effect) and the new one that is the burst cd we need (and +30%damage = it will istant nerf and we know) is a good talent even if it is not something unseen.

Don’t take me wrong, I’m happy to see something but from my point of view there are so many work to do that it’s early to celebrate.
Still we have a talent tree with 2 cc tier, with too much broken talents, and specs that are not close to the standard design as spells missing.

Well, yes, both Nature’s Vigil and HotW have side-effects that we really don’t care much about. They add to the “hybrid” feel of Druids, but at least now they do it in a way that allows us to give bonus to our throughput at the same time.

As I said on Twitter, Heart of the Wild would be just as viable as if it said: “Increase intellect and agility by 6% and provides tasty muffins.”. The rest is just flavor text, but it still does give a choice between persistent damage and burst damage, and even just looking at Dragon Soul and Firelands, there are cases in both where you would take one over the other.

Don’t forget real meaningful damage increase doesn’t exist in the game. If you gain a 6% passive, you will be balanced around having that. Nature’s Vigil will be able to provide about the same numbers in a long range run when they balance them out. What I want to say is the 6% passive means “I don’t care, just make me equal with others”. If you think the other parts of the talent is useless, then you choose to get nothing there, but a flat number that makes you equal with others.
If they would reduce the cooldown and duration on HotW it would be better. Most of the time we do not want to switch roles for 45 sec, it makes a part of the duration pointless. But something entirely new would be the best. Something that worth it without that boring passive up part. I have an idea how could HotW be more interesting, in case they don’t want to change it in the end. Make it grant an ability from the specializations you are not in, addition to the current performance increasing part of it.

Vigil sounds good though, because there you get something to use, it makes the game more interesting. Passive talent can be good too, but only if it changes the way you play (i.e. SotF). 6% flat won’t.

DoC isn’t bad in my opinion. It aims to let you use a heal here and there without loosing dps. Cast a heal > make up for the lost time with the next damage spell. You occasional heals will also be better this way.
