Mastery, Haste .. oh, and our DoTs!

A lot of people still ask me what to reforge for. Hands down, this is haste. Haste not only affects both Wrath and Starfire, it also affects our DoTs. If your item already has haste, reforge to crit. Mastery is a very poor stat for us as we’re not constantly in an Eclipse.
Also, something I just recently realized, was how to determine how quickly our DoTs will tick. Our DoTs tick as quickly as the hasted cast time of the same duration spell. For example, Moonfire and Insect Swarm (and Sunfire once it’s fixed) tick at a 2 second base. Wrath, when talented, also has a 2 second cast time. Whatever your current cast time is for Wrath, that’ll be how often your DoTs tick. Currently you can look at Starfire to see how often Sunfire will tick. With bloodlust and Black Magic, I’ve been able to get .8 second Wraths and .8 second DoT ticks, obtaining 22 ticks in an 18 second duration. The good thing is, while Wrath still clips at 1 second due to the global cooldown, DoT ticks do not.

If we have so much haste that wie jump from one eclipse to the next in 18 s mastry is slightly better than crit.. i thing
but you need a very high haste value

Nice point about the DoT ticks.
Regarding stats, I agree that Haste > Mastery/Crit, however I currently advocate Mastery as being preferential to Crit.
This may be due to having high haste levels allowing swift Eclipse shifts though, and I am sure there is a magic number for the point at which Mastery is superior to Crit.
All in all the difference between Mastery and Crit seems negligible though in the long run. It’s a difference between spells averaging a harder hit over all casts, and spells averaging a harder hit over specific (eclipsed) casts. If you’re able to line up DoTs more often within eclipse without losing GCDs and the like then, yeah
I just don’t feel too happy catagorically saying one way or the other, else people will take it as gospel from now until eternity, hence why in my own 4.0.1 guide I made it clear it’s shouldn’t be taken as being the absolute final way it should be

Black Magic is edging the +63sp to weapon? Interesting. I’ll have to try it out.

Aeiedil — While mastery might slightly edge crit at high high haste levels, the point will be moot once we hit Cataclysm as we’ll never see these values again (or at least a long time)

True in Cataclysm it won’t matter, however for the time being I’m presenting information for the current live version. It might not last forever, but it’ll last another month yet

I just tested this. With 1251 haste, I had about a 200 DPS loss by going from Crit to Mastery (up to 14.08 mastery rating).

Is that simulated or ingame? If ingame, how long of a sample did you use?

In game. I did 5million damage blocks on a training dummy.
