PTR Build: Eclipse Change
by Sunfyre on Sep.30, 2010, under Cataclysm
Apparently Blizzard does read my blog, because a stealth change was added onto the PTR regarding Eclipse:
The Eclipse buff still reads: “…Cancelled when (Wrath|Starfire) causes (Solar|Lunar) Energy to reach 0.
However, Starsurge now cancels Eclipse when Lunar Energy reaches 0, as well. In case you were wondering, this is how I was able to proc both Eclipse, was to Starsurge from one Eclipse to another.
New Beta Build, more PVP changes
by Sunfyre on Sep.30, 2010, under Cataclysm
Another Beta Build came out, with one more PVP change:
- Fungal Growth now slows enemy targets by 25/50%, down from 35/70%.
I know a lot of you are upset about all of the PVP nerfs, but here’s my opinion. (And yes, I’m a PvE Balance Druid, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt):
PVP is being balanced around rated battlegrounds, 3v3s, and 5v5s, not 2v2 or duels.
That being said, if you sat a rogue on a healer who was within a 10 yard beam of silence, with a 70% snare, they would NEVER stand a chance of leaving it alive.
These nerfs are being looked at on a whole, not just as a balance druid. I think even with a 5 yard beam, and a 50% snare, a healer will have a difficult time getting out of the silence while a rogue is constantly stunlocking, and able to save a kick just in case the healer does leave the beam.
4.0 / Cataclysm Balance Druid Rotation, Glyphs, Tips and Tricks
by Sunfyre on Sep.30, 2010, under Cataclysm
Glyphs
Glyph of Moonfire (this also affects Sunfire)
Glyph of Insect Swarm
Glyph of Wrath
Rotation (from 0 Energy)
I personally like to move towards Lunar first and get Starfall cooldown up and running ASAP.
Force of Nature
Moonfire, Insect Swarm
Wrath (this ensures your power is moving the right way to get your Starsurge going the right way)
Starsurge
Wrath until Lunar Eclipse (Starsurge whenever Shooting Stars Procs, or is off cooldown.)
Lunar Eclipse
Starfall (Starfall on cooldown from now on).
Insect Swarm, Moonfire
Starsurge (also cast whenever Shooting Stars Procs, or is off cooldown.)
Starfire until Solar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse
Berserking (if Troll)
Insect Swarm, Sunfire
Starsurge (also casting when Shooting Stars Procs, or is off cooldown.)
Wrath until Lunar Eclipse
Repeat.
Tips and Tricks
I always cast Starfall FIRST in my Lunar Eclipse, as Starfall is not benefited by haste, I do not want to waste one GCD while under Nature’s Grace (which happens when I moonfire)
I always cast Force of Nature when I’m NOT under Nature’s Grace (usually between Eclipse), for the same reason as Starfall.
Nature’s Grace is an odd talent, in that it doesn’t grant the spell haste to the spell that causes it to proc. That being said, you’ll want to Insect Swarm before Moonfire in Lunar Eclipse, and Sunfire in Solar Eclipse. Sunfire’s base damage is higher then that of Insect Swarm, when both are glyphed.
While Berserking does not specifically state “haste”, it does give additional DoT ticks.
4.0.1 Live Next Week?
by Sunfyre on Sep.30, 2010, under General
MMO-Champion reports that 4.0.1 is live next week. This gives you very little time to polish your new rotation. I suggest before next Tuesday you all buy a [item]45603[/item] as it’ll morph into a Glyph of Starsurge. I’ll post some DPS pointers a little later on today.
Tier 11 Models Updated!
by Sunfyre on Sep.29, 2010, under Cataclysm, Gear Discussion
The ‘Balance Gear’ page has been updated with the latest model updates from our friends at MMO-Champion. I must say, I am EXTREMELY IMPRESSED. Click to the Cataclysm Balance Gear for more images.

PTR: Mastery vs Haste
by Sunfyre on Sep.28, 2010, under Cataclysm
I was able to get Mastery to work on the new PTR build (I had to copy a new character over and learn mastery before I talented anything), so I reforged for Mastery and ran another 10mil damage to get a new parse. The DPS numbers obviously went up as I’m running 42% (158 Mastery) Eclipse damage versus 25% Eclipse damage (About 1.5k dps).
Here’s the numbers: 12979 DPS
Starfire: 22.9%
Wrath: 20.4%
Insect Swarm: 19.9%
Starfall: 16.0%
Starsurge: 9.3%
Moonfire: 5.8%
Sunfire: 2.9%
Languish: 1.5%
Moonfire (Direct): .5%
Sunfire (Direct): .5%
I’m ran these exact same numbers reforging the 158 Mastery into 134 Haste/24 Crit Rating to see how it skews the percentages. If Graylo’s calcs should be right, the 158 haste should easily win out. I think you can see how Insect Swarm lost a slight amount of percentage whereas Starfall gained it, as Starfall actually gains from Mastery and not Haste.
After exchanging 158 Mastery for 134 Haste & 24 Crit:
13424 DPS
Starfire: 22.1%
Wrath: 21.3%
Insect Swarm: 20.5%
Starfall: 15.6%
Starsurge: 9.0%
Moonfire: 5.7%
Sunfire: 2.9%
Languish: 1.8%
Moonfire (Direct): .5%
Sunfire (Direct): .5%Starfall, as expected, did a smaller percentage as it gains nothing from haste, yet gains from the mastery. It appears Insect Swarm favors haste over mastery considerably.
New Beta Build, New Balance Changes (again)
by Sunfyre on Sep.28, 2010, under Cataclysm, PVP Discussion
Just one slight change in the most recent beta build:
- Solar Beam now affects targets within 5 yards, down from 10 yards.
Not going to complain a whole lot.. 10 yards was kinda OP.
Also, looks like PTR received a slight patch. I’ll provide details shortly.
Question of the Week: Race
by Sunfyre on Sep.27, 2010, under Cataclysm, General
Troll or Tauren? Worgen or Night Elf?
What race do you plan on for Cataclysm?
I’m going to have to go Troll unless they nerf Berserking or do something to give Tauren a racial that helps PvE.
Glyph of Starsurge exists on PTR!
by Sunfyre on Sep.27, 2010, under Cataclysm
If you copy over your character to the PTR with “Glyph of Nourish”, it’ll magically turn itself into the “Glyph of Starsurge” on the PTR! Go have fun!
If you’ve already copied over and don’t want to burn another copy, I brought over 8 additional glyphs on Broxigar (US-PVP). Come find me and I’ll give you one. I’m Sunfyyre on PTR.
Tale of Two Moons…
by Sunfyre on Sep.27, 2010, under Cataclysm
I get bored at 3 am, so I thought I’d play around.
Apparently it’s possible to:
- Be under the effects of both Eclipse at the same time
- Do ~10.3k DPS (w/o Total Eclipse)
- Have unlimited mana
I feel like singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler right now… and making a “Oh my god it’s a double Eclipse!” viral YouTube video.
