Cataclysm Balance Preview: Solar Beam

by on Apr.17, 2010, under General

During the 4/16 Twitter Developer Chat Chat, Zarhym released one of their “most exciting” changes to Cataclysm is a new Balance Talent called “Solar Beam”.  It appears it will work like the sun beams in the Freya encounter.

“Some of the new Balance talents for druids, like Solar Beam, which works like Freya’s spell where it instantly silences a target and they have to move out of the beam to get rid of the debuff.”

Looks interesting for PVP, and perhaps for trash pack pulls in PvE, but I’m not seeing a big PvE bonus for this.  But it might be a big boon for arena druids, allowing you to force healers out in the open and not LoS-ing behind a stupid box.

I’m actually very excited. My first and fav spec is boom but have been tree for my guilds raids. The pvp and pve implications will benefit groups that aren’t overpowered for where they’re at but level effective. Caster hammering on healer and tank can’t/wont pick them up? Silence them save the healer. Multiple mobs pulled by mistake soloing? Pop a silence on one of the healers cyclone another and unleash aoe breakdown on the others. Or snap a heal off on yourself while they close to melee range.

If this Solar beam holds in court till it will be realeased, then it would be an absolutely awesome speel for moonkins in arenas.. I play only arena as a moonkin.. I like it.. but the lack of silence and stuns is a pain.. so solar beam would be VERY welcome.

I think it depends on a few variables. It’s either going to need to be a big ass beam, have a long duration, or a short cool down and some sort of slow to keep people from getting out of it. If its a 5 or 10 yard radius and theres no spell lockout on the initial cast/silence, it seems pretty avoidable. If it stayed for 30 seconds or so, it’d be nice to drop behind pillars to prevent people from LoSing you. Time will tell I guess.

It has to cover a really big surface if this is to prevent pillar hugging.

It sounds interesting but i’m afraid it will be to easy to avoid. This will work like a sharm against those nasty warlock pets though.

In addition i’d like to say to:
“But it might be a big boon for arena druids, allowing you to force healers out in the open and not LoS-ing behind a stupid box. ”

There is not a single hostile spell in WoW you can cast while it’s LoS from you (line of sight). This means you’ll have to put the effect next to the pillar. This means the diameter of the spell needs to be atleast 2 times as big as the pillar itself. Now take the blade’s edge arena pillars in mind …
