Question of the Week: Authenticators

by on Dec.20, 2009, under General

Blizzard Authenticator.  Do you use it?  Which do you use?  The key fob or the Mobile Authenticator for iPhone/iPod touch?  Will the new Core Hound Pup convince you to use one?

Personally, I tried the iPhone app, but was not happy with how long it took to load and display a code.  When I randomly disconnect from the server, especially if it were to happen in a raid, I don’t want to have to run all over my house looking for my phone.  I still subscribe to the age old adage of “don’t share your password with anyone, and don’t download anything janky that could have a keylogger in it”.  It seems to work well for me.

If you haven’t seen the Core Hound Pup, here’s a video of it, courtesy of MMO Champion:  (not sure why it says Perky Pug)

I use the iphone app myself as well. I usually leave the authenticator app running while I’m playing (when you bring the phone out of standby it’ll still be running) so it’s not that much of a hassle imo.

As for the adage – it’s a good one, but you can’t keep your guard up 24/7. Also can you guarantee that absolutely nobody else will use your pc? One or two guild members got hacked despite claiming to do the same as you do.

Nowdays you don’t have to download anything to get a keylogger, you can be infected simply by visiting an infected website.

I’ve had the original physical authenticator for a while now. It lives on the desk next to my computer. All I have to do is pick it up, push a button, enter a number. Secure quick and easy.

Considering that my PC is in my office, and I don’t have any roommates, I’m pretty certain I know who uses my PC. ;)

Don’t use one, see no reason to. And I can’t justify spending money on a vanity pet.

If you get your account hacked, it can take between 1 and 3 weeks to get everything restored. Even people with super good computer security can still be hacked. MOST anti-virus programs won’t scan for keyloggers, and ones that do scan for keyloggers can still miss them. Account hacking is a really aweful thing, and I do everything in my power (including having an authenticator) to protect my account.

I love the authenticators because they prevent you from losing all your gold, items, or characters. They prevent you from having your characters transferred off the account, because the hackers can’t get into your account management page, either.

The keyring authenticator is really small, durable, and comes in fun patterns & colors. It’s easy to take it with you if you travel. They are also really inexpensive.

I own a couple different colors (the first Blizzard one, a Blizzcon 2008 one, and I just ordered the newest WoW version). At this point, I treat them like collectors’ items, lol. I highly recommend them because they help protect your account.
