3.3 Change: Eclipse BUFFED?!
by Sunfyre on Dec.02, 2009, under General
According to MMO Champion, the following was added to the patch notes:
Spell "Eclipse" not found. now increases damage done by Wrath by 40% (up from 30%) and the critical chance of Starfire by 40% (up from 30%)
I guess they are trying to compensate for nerfing 2pc T8. I definately did NOT see this one coming.
Thoughts?
I’m glad they’re attempting to fix the damage disparity. I am sure that 4pc T9 or T10 will be a huge boost in DPS. I really wish they would have tried to find a way to do it without putting more eggs in the proverbial Eclipse basket, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Not sure why, but I was also expecting something that would have affected baseline dps. This change is consistent with the Blizz MO of incorporating old set bonuses into glyphs and talents to ease transition.
Here’s hoping we don’t have to run around too much in ICC.

I wasnt really expecting much less, i mean, they’ve clearly stated that they want Eclipse to stay…, so buffing it seems the right direction to go.

To be honest, I kind of did see this coming. I was expecting on the order of a 5% buff, but I definitely won’t complain about 10%.
Reading further into this, this is Blizzard’s way of saying “yes, we are definitely sticking with Eclipse as the center of the Balance rotation”. Despite many moonkin whining about how RNG-dependent the talent is, I do like and enjoy it.
That said, I won’t be surprised if they bump the lunar Eclipse proc chance to 70% or so.

I agree the proc rate needs adjusted. Especially with the wise eclipse break. I still am troubled to find ANY other class that has so much dps wrapped into 3 measly talent points (with the exception of moonkin form, shadow form, etc.)

I don’t think that’s the appropriate way to look at it. Every class has “mandatory” talent points that greatly increase DPS. Fire mages have Hot Streak and Ignite, arms warriors have Sudden Death and Taste for Blood, we have Eclipse and Nature’s Grace. These three examples have the majority of their DPS coming from a few talents. Other classes (destruction warlocks, for example) have a majority of their DPS coming from a lot of different talents.
Also, the proc rate needs adjusted because it’s a very low proc rate (60% * crit), NOT because of WiseEclipse. They should not balance the game around an addon that they broke. That was, essentially, player-added functionality, not something Blizz designed into the game.

Sure Wise eclipse was taking advantage of mechanics, but we needed it to stay competitive in dps. I’m glad they gave us another way to compensate without needing it.

They kiiind of gave us a passive T8 bonus. This way we can use T9 or T10 4piece without having to keep around our t8 bonus.
That’s a good buff. Gladly accepted.
Would you guys explain to me why Moonfury isnt considered by developpers to get buffed in a way? its a pretty simple talent, we dont really avoid it when talenting stuff and it could just be an upgrade like 15% damage instead of 10%. Yes? no? I’m stoopzid?

Most classes and specs get a static 10% increased damage or healing at some point in the talent tree. If they increased ours, everyone else would be up in arms. Much easier to increase something like Earth and Moon or Master Shapeshifter, as Graylo suggested, or our central damage source, as Blizzard did.

The change is obviously well for making up for the fixes last week. I would have been sad if they would have left it at that. Some form of buff was to be expected, or the moonkin community would have been I’m (an even bigger uproar).
But while it buffs us, it first fix us. I am so close to the crit cap, and in 3.3 with the new idol I would be about 2.5% away from 100%, and I might still catch some upgrades before ICC (hopefully next week). I would really like to see a change that would make haste valuable again, now that we stand to gain less from crit (when we go above the cap, just like with haste).
We probably won’t see that with 3.3, but maybe they will tweak us a bit when new parts of ICC is released and we start complaining even more about our caps

So incoming days? more changes? or do you guys think this is blizzard’s final answer to “will moonkins be competitive in 3.3?”
December 3rd, 2009 on 3:28 am
I dont think we will see any more changes if 3.3 actually comes out next week. The current patch on PTR is classed as the release client. That doesn’t make it sure, but if Blizzard doesn’t put out the patch next week, we probably wont see it before january.
