Question of the Week: Icecrown Citadel Difficulty

by on Dec.30, 2009, under General

Do you feel Icecrown Citadel is tuned too easy?  On Sargeras, 19 guilds had the first four bosses down the first week … on 25man.  I sincerely hope the next wings get considerably harder.

Clarification on Raid Guides…

by on Dec.24, 2009, under General

While I’m flattered to be featured in the Bosskillers Lady Deathwhisper guide, I was a bit taken back by their comments.  I just wanted to clarify that I make no claim, nor do I intend to give a step by step guide on every mechanic on every fight, nor step by step details on the roll of every class / role in the fight.  My goal is to give a brief rundown of what you should know if you’re a moonkin who’s seeing the fight for the first time and want to be brought up to speed about what you need to look out for, what abilities they have, and what your role most likely will be.

Besides, so far these boss fights aren’t exactly difficult.  If the 25 collective heads in your raid (or even 10) can’t figure out how to kill it, well…

Happy Holidays

by on Dec.23, 2009, under General

We’ve reached a calm in the 3.3 madness, as most guilds have pushed through the first four bosses and eagerly wait the next wing to be released in Icecrown.  I guess that’s good as the holiday season is here.  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, or any other holiday, please have a safe and wonderful holiday!

Interesting Spam

by on Dec.22, 2009, under General

The spam filter Akismet Stats is absolutely amazing at filtering out spam.  It’s filtered out 100% of the spam I’ve had posted (248 comments so far), and only had 3 mis-identifications of actual legit comments.  I have had some interesting spam comments lately.  Today one poster was trying to hawk Farmville cheats and gold.  I also received this interesting letter in my Owlkin email, and I thought I’d share it.  It’s not exactly a Nigerian prince, but it’s close:

From Miss Ameena Mohammad.
Country: Cote D’Ivoire.
City: Abidjan Ivoire Coast.

Hello dear,

Dear with profound respect and humble submission,I got your contact in and I beg to state the following few lines for your kind consideration, I hope you will spare some of your valuable minutes to read the following appeal with sympathetic mind. I must confess that it is with great hopes, joy and enthusiasm that I write you this mail which I know and believe by the faith that it must surely find you in good condition of health. My name is Miss Ameena Mohammad, I am the only Daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Ammar Mohammed. My father was a highly reputable business magnet who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days.
It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on the 20th May 2008. Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of mine who travelled with him at that time. But Allah knows the truth! My mother died when I was just 6yrs old, and since then my father took me so special.

Before the death of my father on May 2008, he called me and informed me that he has the sum of Six Million, Five Hundred thousand United State Dollars.(USD$6,500,000.00) he deposited in a private Bank here in Abidjan Cote D’Ivoire. He told me that he deposited the money in my name, and also gave me all the necessary legal documents regarding to this deposit with the Bank.

I am just 21 years old and a university undergraduate and really don’t know what to do. Now I want an honest and Allah fearing partner overseas who I can transfer this money with his assistance and after the transaction I will come and reside permanently in your country till such a time that it will be convinient for me to return back home if I so desire. This is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually brought sorrow to my life. I also want to invest the fund under your care because I am ignorant of business world.
I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded. Now permit me to ask these few questions:
1. Can you honestly help me from your heart?
2. Can I completely trust you?
3. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you after the fund has being transfeered to your account and i come over to meet you ?

Please, consider this and get back to me as soon as possible. Immedaitely I confirm your willingness, I will send to you my Picture and also inform you more details involved in this matter.
Anticipating hearing from you soon.
Thanks and may Allah bless you for your concern to help an orphan like me.
Kind Regards,
Miss Ameena Mohammad.

Gripe of the Week #10: PuGs

by on Dec.21, 2009, under Gripe of the Week

This gripe really has nothing to do with being a druid.  Although it was a druid who caused my ire.  I was pugging ToC on my hunter this week, and a druid decided to claim feral as their mainspec, even though they were healing the instance, and WoW armory showed their specs as resto/balance, wearing balance gear, and the tier 10 balance idol.  They won the roll for [item]Lupine Longstaff[/item], and the pug raid leader, like a dolt, just gave it to him, even though I pointed out that he’s not feral.

I had my revenge on Anub’arak.  Apparently he doesn’t shapeshift into bear form fast enough when the adds are misdirected to him.  The raid ended up wiping, falling apart, and I had my revenge.

Icecrown Raid Guide: Lady Deathwhisper

by on Dec.20, 2009, under General

[npc]36855[/npc] is a fairly simple fight that requires the coordination of several tanks and your dps.  In Phase 1, Lady Deathwhisper utilizes her mana to keep her health pool full, so you must effectively burn through her mana to get to phase two.  In phase one, every so often adds will spawn from one (or three places, if in 25man) side, that have to be dealt with.  There’s a few tricky things with these adds.  First off, the melee mobs quickly gain a melee reflection shield, and the caster mobs have a spell reflection shield, so you need to put your casters on the melee, and the melee on the casters.  It’s also important that if the adds become deformed, or return to life (via [spell]72498[/spell]), that they be killed as soon as possible.  Once you are done killing adds, the DPS returns to Lady Deathwhisper.  She will throw out death and decay, which you should immediately run out of.  It’s suggested that enhancement shamans (and to an extent retribution paladins) stay on the boss the entire time.  Since their damage is a mix of both melee and magical, they do not do decent damage to the adds.  You will want to make sure you control her mana shield, and only deplete it once a wave of adds are dead.  Trying to manage Deathwhisper in phase two along with a host of adds can be challenging.  The magical adds also throw out a [spell]71237[/spell] which should be decursed immediately, and in 25man, Deathwhisper will mindcontrol.  Make sure you don’t kill the MC’d person, and have people on sheep/cyclone duty to CC them.

In phase 2, the adds stop and she becomes mobile.  All DPS switches to Deathwhisper.  You will need to continue dodging death and decay and mind control, as well as dodge shades which spawn.  Like Sethekk Halls, these shades are untargetable, and they hit for very hard.  It’s extremely important for your own survival that you stay cognizant of their location.  The tanks will need to switch off taunts, as she puts up a stacking debuff which causes threat generation to be reduced.  Deathwhisper will also AoE frostbolt during phase 2, which can be interrupted.  Phase 2 is generally fairly simple, and if you can get here, it shouldn’t be a problem finishing her off.

Question of the Week: Authenticators

by on Dec.20, 2009, under General

Blizzard Authenticator.  Do you use it?  Which do you use?  The key fob or the Mobile Authenticator for iPhone/iPod touch?  Will the new Core Hound Pup convince you to use one?

Personally, I tried the iPhone app, but was not happy with how long it took to load and display a code.  When I randomly disconnect from the server, especially if it were to happen in a raid, I don’t want to have to run all over my house looking for my phone.  I still subscribe to the age old adage of “don’t share your password with anyone, and don’t download anything janky that could have a keylogger in it”.  It seems to work well for me.

If you haven’t seen the Core Hound Pup, here’s a video of it, courtesy of MMO Champion:  (not sure why it says Perky Pug)

Realm First Feats of Strength change

by on Dec.20, 2009, under General

This was announced awhile ago but MMO Champion is just now reporting it:

Any player who has been on the realm for longer than 60 days is entitled to a realm first achievement. In this particular case, the matter was investigated thoroughly for all parties involved and everyone who was entitled to the achievement should now have received it.

The reason it was changed was to stop players practise on one realm then transfer over to a newer realm and get the achievement, potentially blocking the players on that realm who have been there longer earning it themselves.

I wasn’t aware people were still doing this.  I know people were hopping servers to get more Trial of the Grand Crusader attempts, but they already fixed that.  60 days is a long time though, if you think about it.  I don’t think I’d qualify yet on Sargeras if we got a realm first.  I’m not sure if this was put into place when we got Grand Crusader, because I was driving home from my families house after Thanksgiving weekend the night we did it. :(.

Icecrown Hotfixes

by on Dec.19, 2009, under General

I’m a few days late on this, but I’ve been pretty busy as of late.  There were a few minor tweaks to Icecrown Citadel:

  • Muradin and Saurfang will no longer gain stacks of Battlefury from totems. Additionally, the duration of Battlefury has also been reduced.
  • Lord Marrowgar is now tauntable.
  • Deathbringer Saurfang’s Rune of Blood has been modified to heal 10 times the amount of damage dealt instead of 5 times the damage. This will make the encounter more difficult if you try to tank Saurfang with just one character. The tooltip does not reflect this change, but it will in a future patch.

They’ve also made some changes to the older heroics, that triggered events at certain health levels (such as Ionar, Tharon’ja, etc), to only trigger once per fight.  It was pretty silly with the levels of DPS that exist now, where you’d push them into event after event.

The changes to Marrowgar should help save the morons who can’t control their threat after the agro drop, after the bone storm.  Besides that, shouldn’t be a big deal.  The changes to Battlefury will nerf the Gunship battle a bit, and make it easier for tanking.  The biggest change I think is the buff to the Saurfang encounter.  I know some people have struggled since the hotfix.
