Insect swarm… DPS loss?

by on Sep.06, 2009, under General

With the addition of [spell]67125[/spell] being much better then [spell]64824[/spell], I find [spell]insect swarm[/spell] to be a much less viable part of my DPS rotation. I’m considering removing it from my rotation and replacing [item]Glyph of Insect Swarm[/item] with possibly [item]Glyph of Focus[/item]. I’m open to input on this idea.

Edit:  I’ve decided on [item]Glyph of Starfall[/item] over Glyph of Focus, and I must say, it seems like [spell]Starfall[/spell] is always available!

I stopped glyphing my IS a little while back, but I don’t use the Glyph of Focus — IMO if your going to glyph Starfall, get the Glyph of Starfall and reduce its CD up by 30s.

Just found your blog, nice :)

Yeah, I decided to go with glyph of starfall. 33% more Starfall uptime > 20% additional starfall damage.

You can thank Macbook for my appearance here.

I have to agree with your assessment of Insect Swarm, and replacing that glyph with Glyph of Starfall seems like a wise decision if you’re truly going to be cutting back your use of IS.

I wouldn’t cut IS out of my rotation completely — it still increases the damage of Eclipsed Wrath when used at the beginning of a Solar Eclipse and has better damage per cast time than Eclipsed Wrath. This should yield you an overall DPS increase over removing it from your rotation entirely. This is the approach I’ve decided to take.

That said, both of your DoTs have higher damage per cast time than either of your nukes, even when Eclipsed (even with the 2T8 bonus). Keeping IS up at all times may be a bit clunky (which is why I don’t do it), but it’s theoretically higher DPS if the rotation is executed perfectly.

As this is my first comment, I wanted to mention that I like the site so far. If you’re not familiar with, you should check it out. In addition to a vast amount of information presented in a (usually) mature manner, it may introduce you to other boomkin theorycrafters (and vice versa!). Cheers!

Thanks for the response! I’ve been pretty happy with glyph of starfall. Unfortunately, as I’ve been spec’ing for Gale Winds for Anub’arak hard-mode, I haven’t had Imp IS. As for IS still being more damage per cast time, is that still true when you remove the glyph’s additional damage?

I’ve visited TMR before, and it wasn’t for me. There’s a lot of great information available on TMR, and I’ve recommended many friends just starting out as a moonkin to the site, however, it seemed like (at the time I perused it), most of the “expert moonkin theorycrafters” who were commenting on Ulduar and end-game strategy were still running around in Naxx10 gear. I’m all about number crunching, but I think some actual experience for the fights is required as well. The few knowledgeable people’s comments were hidden like a diamond in the rough among 50 less-so-knowledgeable. I’m going to be posting a gripe of the week about that soon. I do amazing DPS when compared to our other classes when it’s a sit and nuke fight (even on Faction Champs when I’m CCing), however any fight that has any real movement component, it seems I spend more time trying to proc Eclipse then I actually spend under Eclipse affects.

I’ve been running with Glyph of Starfall over Glyph of Insect Swarm (for utility primarily, but also because it fit my pre-3.2 rotation) since 3.1 put solar and lunar rotations on equal ground. Even without the glyph, IS is better DPCT than either nuke. Without Imp. IS, though, there’s really no impetus to drive the use of IS post-4T8.

Yeah, TMR can be very hit-or-miss at times. While there are some people who haven’t progressed as far (myself included, unfortunately), there are quite a few boomkins there who are on the cutting edge of new content, as you seem to be.

Movement is still an issue for us. I can’t even imagine what my DPS would be on Patchwerk right now (I’m doing roughly 6k on Koralon, but even that requires movement), but I’m sitting at roughly 5-5.5k on movement fights. Eclipse is less of an issue now than before, but I find that one of the biggest hindrances for me on movement fights is Nature’s Grace falling off (which really just means I need to refine my rotation).
